An allegory of mental dyssynchrony
a generative art project that reflects on mental misalignment and the unpredictable synchronicity between algorithmic creation and the collector’s encounter with a unique, unchosen piece
The Story
Dysphasing Syndrome is one of the first projects I published on fxhash. It explores the concept of synchronicity, a meeting point between randomness and a collector who acquires a unique piece. This project reflects my interest in how generative art can embody the unexpected and create meaningful connections.
Synchronicity: A Foundational Concept
The idea of synchronicity was first developed through the collaboration between psychologist Carl Gustav Jung and physicist Wolfgang Pauli. They proposed that some events, while unrelated by cause and effect, are connected through meaning. Jung called this a "meaningful coincidence," while Pauli suggested it could reflect hidden order in nature, rooted in mathematics and physics.
Synchronicity emerges when the algorithm generates a piece that, by chance, finds its observer at a specific moment, creating a unique connection. In generative art, this principle becomes tangible. Algorithms are rational and rule-based, yet randomness introduces a touch of unpredictability. This randomness bridges two worlds: the structured logic of code and the subjective experience of the viewer. Synchronicity emerges when the algorithm generates a piece that, by chance, finds its observer at a specific moment, creating a unique connection.
An Allegory of Mental Dyssynchrony
The subtitle of Dysphasing Syndrome, "An allegory of mental dyssynchrony," reflects moments when thoughts or emotions feel out of sync. These mental misalignments, while disorienting, can also be revealing. The project captures this sense of tension—between harmony and dissonance—through visual and structural elements that appear slightly offset or "out of phase."
Each generated piece represents a moment of "precise misalignment".What Does This Artwork Evoke When It Meets Its Collector?
Synchronicity in this project becomes paradoxical. It arises from chaos and unpredictability. Each generated piece represents a moment of "precise misalignment," where seemingly discordant elements converge into a cohesive composition. The collector, who cannot choose their artwork, experiences this tension firsthand: a piece that feels both perfectly timed and entirely unexpected.
Generative art is where the computational and the emotional meet, guided by randomness.Generative Art as a Space for Synchronicity
Code acts like a physicist—logical and precise—while randomness breathes life into the artwork, adding intuition and unpredictability. In Dysphasing Syndrome, this interplay is evident in the structured motifs, algorithmic dephasing, and the randomness that determines both the artwork and its collector.
The result is an act of synchronicity: a coincidence of forces that, though seemingly out of alignment, converge to create a unique and meaningful moment.
